Why Is Your Air Conditioner Blowing Hot Air?

An air conditioner that produces hot or lukewarm air can inspire a panic attack even during the latter days of a Lubbock, Texas, summer. If you can’t detect the faintest hint of conditioned air coming through your vents, one of these problems might be the culprit.

You Haven’t Changed Your Filter

A clogged air filter can prevent your air conditioner from operating correctly. You might feel warm or hot air when the air conditioner kicks on. Remove your air filter and inspect it first; if it’s clogged with dirt and dust, change it for a fresh one and test your air conditioner.

You Accidentally Set Your Thermostat to Heat

If you bump against your thermostat control panel while passing it in the hall, you might accidentally bump the switch to heat rather than cool. Similarly, a guest might have used your thermostat incorrectly, or perhaps your child decided to play with it. Before you panic, check your thermostat to make sure its temperature setting is pointed to cool.

You’re Out of R-22 Refrigerant

A refrigerant leak can cause all the R-22 in your system to escape the HVAC unit. This results in warm air because your system doesn’t contain any refrigerant to cool it. If you suspect a refrigerant leak, contact an HVAC specialist to diagnose the problem. Never attempt to refill R-22 on your own or plug any holes in the pipes.

Your Outside Unit Is Compromised

If leaves, branches, and other landscaping debris pile up on your exterior AC unit, it might fail to produce cold air. Clean any debris off the air conditioner and test your unit again. If it works, you’ll know to watch this problem closely. Alternatively, you might need an HVAC expert to clean it more thoroughly.

Simple problems, such as clogged air filters, require only a few minutes of attention. However, if you discover that your air conditioner needs more specialized care, give us a call at 806-589-1014 to schedule a service call.
