Saving Energy in the Warmer Months

When temperatures get high in Plainview, Texas, your cool, air-conditioned home becomes a refuge. With the AC working extra hard in these months, it’s important to keep it running at peak efficiency. Being aware of common AC issues, like poor airflow or short cycling, can help you save energy in these warmer months.

AC Not Cooling Enough

Sometimes an air conditioner might stop blowing cool air. This will force it to run constantly to reach thermostat levels.

The reason behind this problem could be a refrigerant leak, or the condenser drain could be clogged. Another possibility is that the filter is dirty and is restricting air delivery while straining the system.

It’s important to make sure your system’s refrigerant level is stable, your drain is clean, and your filter gets changed regularly.

Short-Cycling

Another common issue a homeowner might notice is when an AC cycles on for a few minutes, shuts off again soon after, and repeats this pattern throughout the day.

A short-cycling AC drains energy and hikes up your utility bills. It points to a host of possibilities including a refrigerant leak, dirty filter, frozen coils, defective wiring, and overheating, all of which can force the unit to keep shutting down. An oversized unit that cools too quickly will also cause your unit to short cycle.

Keeping up with maintenance tasks and making sure your unit is properly sized and installed will help you prevent these issues.

Poor Airflow

Weak airflow could be the result of any of the above problems but could also signal some obstruction or leak in the ductwork or a closed vent. Airflow issues that are left unaddressed can lead to bigger AC complications after a short while. Make sure your vents and vent returns are open and that your ductwork is in good condition.
