- Install and use a programmable thermostat. If you and your family are away from home a good deal of the day, a programmable thermostat can help lower cooling bills dramatically. Set the thermostat to keep the home comfortable when people are home and bring it to a more energy-efficient setting when no one’s home. That cuts your cooling costs all summer.
- Have an annual A/C tuneup. You probably have your car tuned up occasionally to make sure it’s running efficiently and working well. The same principle stands when it comes to home air conditioning. An annual HVAC inspection and tuneup will keep the system working efficiently, which will keep cooling costs as low as possible.
- Check the air filter each month. Air conditioning needs a constant flow of air to work properly. A clogged air filter doesn’t allow air to flow as it should, which makes the system work harder. That, in turn, drives up energy costs. A dirty air filter also allows dust to build up in the ducts and inside the HVAC equipment, which diminishes efficiency.
- Seal and insulate ductwork. As ductwork ages, gaps, holes,and leaks can develop. Some older systems lose up to 20 percent of cooled air due to these openings. That means the A/C is working harder at the same time. Sealing these air leaks and insulating the ductwork will improve the efficiency of the system and decrease cooling costs.
